Charlie Phillips is a qualified solicitor and a globally recognised expert in music rights management, with over two decades of experience spanning international licensing, rights & data optimisation, and music industry advocacy.
Charlie spent a decade representing the independent music sector, running the Worldwide Independent Network (WIN), and legal/business affairs for the Association of Independent Music (AIM), and various roles at IFPI.
Notable successes in collective licensing include securing multiple millions of dollars for the world’s leading independent labels through a long-term, sector-wide rights optimisation initiative.
This work led to Charlie conceiving the RDx data exchange platform for international collective licensing organisations. Charlie developed and launched RDx together with IFPI, PPL and other stakeholders. RDx is now used by many CMOs, transforming how they handle neighbouring rights data and significantly improving efficiency and transparency in royalty distributions.
Charlie has worked extensively with recording artists, ensuring their rights are accurately and comprehensively represented across key territories, helping them achieve substantial revenue improvements.
His expertise in rights management, coupled with a hands-on approach to resolving repertoire conflicts and optimising metadata, combines with a commitment to helping rights holders understand their options and improve their position in an increasingly complex global music ecosystem.
Charlie started his career as a recording studio engineer, working on projects such as the location recording of Radiohead’s ‘Kid A’ and ‘Amnesiac’ albums. He went on to hold senior positions at Capital Radio and Napster before qualifying as a solicitor in 2009.
